BIGScribe and NAV are delighted to be able to invite Alison (Heartland Boy) and Dawn (Budget Babe) to share on their recent wedding experiences and help participants to plan a wedding within their budget:

Here's some of the biggest takeaways from their sharing:

How to plan a wedding within your Budget

What I Learnt From Alison (Heartland Boy)

Alison’s 6 tips to plan a wedding left a big impression on the participants.

One of the most interesting tip was something he termed “I Am A Friend Of A Friend”.

Since most participants would have friends who recently got hitched, it made perfect sense to approach them and leverage on their experience.

If these friends had raving reviews and recommended certain wedding vendors, that could be a useful reference in the planning.

Alison also suggested borrowing the bridal car from family members to cut down on the cost. This piece of advice is really applicable for many judging from the number of nods from the audience.

At the same time, Alison also suggested working with interns or new companies for lower-risk categories like photography and the wedding cake. Besides charging lower rates, these vendors would likely be more meticulous and committed to your wedding to get a good review and build up their portfolio.

What I Learnt From Dawn (Budget Babe)

Dawn held her wedding less than a year ago and the participants were treated to many picture of her beautiful wedding!

Many of the participants appreciated how she divided the wedding expenses into two main categories: “The Must-Haves” and the “Good-To-Haves”.

Most importantly, she added that everyone has different preferences and the list will be unique to each couple. For example, she felt that a 3 tier wedding cake was a must-have but this could be a frivolous item for other couples.

Dawn also explained how to come up with a budget for the wedding and described some measures on how to cut wedding costs reasonably.

One of the biggest consideration was the venue. With hotel banquet prices escalating, it’s no coincidence that both Dawn and Alison did not hold their wedding at a hotel.

For someone who is on a tight budget, Dawn also shared her tips on how to hold a wedding for less than $10,000! There were concrete examples on how to reduce the costs for gowns and beautiful venues that did not cost a bomb.

Conclusion

During the Q & A session, both Alison and Dawn gave useful advice.

They felt that it was not prudent to get into debts to finance a “dream” wedding. Starting on the wrong financial footing could easily jeopardise the marriage.

Most of the participants also noted down the list of vendors they recommended.
